Lane County Will Host a Community
Open House for the Goodpasture Covered Bridge Rehabilitation Project
On January 28, Lane County and OBEC Consulting Engineers will host a community Open House from 1-4 p.m., at the Leaburg Fire and Training Center, 42870 McKenzie Highway to provide updates regarding the Goodpasture Covered Bridge Rehabilitation Project.
The project is currently in the design phase, and the following topics will be addressed:
- Bridge Rehabilitation Overview
- Construction Schedule
- Traffic Control
- Bridge Lighting
The bridge, built in 1938, is a 238-foot, four-span timber structure. It is one of the most beautiful and photographed bridges in the state of Oregon. It also provides the only access across the McKenzie River for approximately 200 residences along with logging and recreational users. The bridge carries approximately 750 vehicles per day.
The work will include installation of temporary steel trusses to support the bridge while work is underway, provision of a post-tensioning system to restore the load capacity of the bridge, and “tuning” of the bridge by tightening the hanger rods to alleviate the sag. Decaying structural members will be replaced, as well as all of the bridge decking of the main span and north approach span. Upon completion, the temporary steel trusses will be removed.
The Goodpasture Covered Bridge rehabilitation project construction cost of $2 million is funded through a federal grant under the Highway Bridge Program and a 10.27 percent match from the Lane County Road Fund.
