Cleaning up After Recent Storms? Watch for Hazardous Waste

Many community members are already cleaning up from recent storm events. Please remember that common household chemicals like paint, cleaners and pesticides – even motor oil and antifreeze – can be hazardous to human health and the environment when handled or disposed of improperly.

Some of these household wastes, like used motor oil, antifreeze, automotive batteries and medical sharps, can be recycled at all Lane County transfer sites for free (some quantity limits may apply, and motor oil and antifreeze must not be contaminated with debris or other liquids). Lane County’s Hazardous Waste program accepts most other household hazardous wastes by appointment for free at the Glenwood household hazardous waste facility. In some cases, staff may be able to refer you to other programs offering free disposal for specific household hazardous wastes like paint and fluorescent lamps.

Most businesses and other non-household sources may use Lane County’s Conditionally Exempt Generator program to dispose of hazardous waste at much lower cost than if they were to arrange disposal through a contractor.

Call Lane County’s Waste Management Division at 541-682-4120 for information on how to safely handle and dispose of hazardous wastes, or visit our website at
