Who are the youth
served by the
Department of Youth Services?
The Department of Youth Services is part of Lane County's public safety system. DYS staff work with juveniles referred by law enforcement, that is youth who have been cited or arrested for law violations.
In 2009, there were 1,576 individual juvenile offenders in Lane County. Juvenile offenders were referred by law enforcement to the juvenile department 2, 244 times for 3,599 crimes. On average, each youth committed 2.28 crimes.
Between 2008 and 2009:
- Person crimes decreased by 10.6% (282 to 242).
- Property crime decreased 13.2% (991 to 860).
- Other crime increased 2.5 % (447 to 458).
- Total crime decreased 8.0% (2,440 to 2,244).

- Crimes with an increase include: Criminal mischief (9.8%), Robberty (66.7%), property other (50.0%), alcohol/substance (27.0%), disorderly conduct (5.7%), and public order other (14.3%)
