The following common hazardous or specail waste items are accepted from households in the recycling area at all, some or most Lane County transfer sites:
Batteries -- including automotive (lead-acid), alkaline (dry cell), lithium, mercury, silver oxide, button cell, nickel-cadmium (rechargeable), and others. Alkaline batteries sold in Oregon after 1996 are mercury-free and not accepted for recycling. Batteries that are dated 2000 or later, have a "green tree", "green leaf" or other symbol which identifies the battery is mercury-free can be thrown in the trash. If no symbol or indication of date is apparent, we will accept them and handle as if they have mercury.
Motor Oil -- includes transmission and hydraulic oils, but not gasoline, diesel or other fuels. Empy your container into our tank, and ideally keep and reuse the container for future oil collection. Once contaminated with oil the container is not recyclable.
Oil filters are accepted only at Glenwood, Cottage Grove, Creswell, Veneta, and Florence.
Antifreeze is accepted at Glenwood, Rattlesnake, Cottage Grove, Creswell, Veneta and Florence. All types of automotive coolants are accepted. No cutting fluids, machine coolants, etc.
Sharps (needles) -- accepted at all sites if they are securely packaged in a red, rigid, puncture-proof plastic container. Commercial sharps containers are available locally; other containers such as liquid detergent bottles may also be used with good results, as long as they are red, hard plastic. Milk jugs, coffee cans, soda bottles and similar containers cannot be accepted.
TVs, Laptops, Computers and Monitors -- It is against state law to put these items in the garbage in Oregon. Free recycling of this item is available at Glenwood, Cottage Grove, Vida, Veneta and Florence. (7 or less at a time) Several other options are available in Lane County, some could be more convenient, see www.oregonecycles.org for more information.
